I disagree. Nobody else in the industry is doing it. CarPlay and Android Auto comes with entry level compacts from Hyundai, Mazda, Honda, etc with no subscriptions and those cars carry razor thin margins for the automakers. BMW's are already on the pricey side relative to Audi and MB so to me this is a cash grab and a bad look for the brand trying to squeeze more money from customers. No other way to spin this.

I’m gonna pay it because I have to, but I’m also going to find some way to ding BMW for it on the quality surveys that will be coming my way in the next few months.

Why lost? AFAIK, they still charge for ConnectedDrive after the initial hook, I mean, trial year.

If I would have never ordered navigation from BMW (have never done it with any manufacturer) but it was bundled in with my car.
I must say that I like the BMW nav better and Car Play does interfere with it. Need extra steps to turn Car Play off. But, I do think Google Maps is smarter. BMW does update their maps frequently (over the air), but it doesn't know current on demand traffic conditions.
So I appreciate being able to do both.

What I mean, is that if I have Apple CarPlay why do I need to pay for CD RTTI, SOS, Maps, Apps, etc. The only CD feature that I really like and may continue to pay for since I'll have to cut a check for Apple CarPlay anyway is the Remote Services, e.g. locate my car, are my doors locked and windows up and BTW how much gas do i have, etc.

Apple CarPlay supports RTTI. Depends on your region.

As I said, BMW navigation is way better than Apple Maps. Google maps is smarter, but the interface (on Apply Carplay) sucks compared to BMW nav.

BMW has always charged for Apple Carplay. They used to charge one time for the option, now they charge per year.
Their argument is that most of their target customers lease their cars under 3 years. At $80/year, that's cheaper than the $300 option cost. That's just marketing BS. Basically, they charge because they can.
They are not compensating for any loss of revenue.

The $300 covered the cost of the hardware, WiFi, etc. and if it didn't your math is WAY OFF $300/20 years = $15

Did you read what I wrote? $80 x 3 = $240 for most people.

I'm not most people.

BMW can try to rationalize it how ever they want and for those of us who do like Apple CarPlay and don't switch cars every time something new and shinny is announced it sucks.

In fact, I'm out twice for Apple CarPlay once on the M2 $300 and now M2C $80/year.

I couldn't "transfer" Apple CarPlay from the M2 b/c it's with the car not a subscription, but that's on me for switching cars.

What I'd really like to know is if the new M2 owner will have to pay $80/year or if they get the remainder for free.

Also what happens if my WiFi or some other piece of hardware dies out of warranty. Does that $80/year cover the repairs? If not then, I'm paying for a "subscription" that they cannot deliver. Either way, like other and I have said. It's BS and a complete money grab. You won't see anyone ponying up $80/year for a Google/Android subscription.

I would say on iOS 13 with its new split screen this is a must have mod.

This is a perfect example. If BMW wants me to pay $80/year then continually update CD. I don't need ID7 but it sure shouldn't be hard to add an option for things like full screen.

I did read it and it's still BS. Even if their target audience leases for 3 years why would you lower the price by $60 when your already getting $300

Not getting mad. Just not agreeing. He’s just parroting what BMW said which I just don’t happen to believe.
