Direct Replacement Track Tires M2C

I'm doing my first track event in the M2C in May and am wanting to replace the tires with something possibly wider and of course stickier.

In the past I've run Sport Cup 2's and R888R's. Have any of you run those or any other mode on the stock M2C wheels? What size did you run?

Thanks in advance!

I’d go 255/35 285/35 RE-71R. You won’t find faster tires for the stock wheels.

Running Cup2's in OE size...hate them. Will be going with R888R's next in a 265/35/19f and 285/35/19r...some run the 30 profile setups but I'll setup mine for the taller tire.

R888R has the same longevity as RE-71R, but less grip.

I haven't run the RE-71s yet, but have heard nothing but good things. Thank you!

Another opinion here. re71rs are autox tires, not track day tires.

On a track RE71r's get up to temp very quickly and the soft grippy compound is fast.... for 5-6 hard laps before it drops off a cliff. they get very hot, very quickly and become super greasy. A short rest in between sessions and they are good to go again, heat cycling doesn't seem to be a significant problem. However, the real problem with the re71rs is in the 200 wear rating lie. You are looking at 4-5 track days out of a set before you hit cord. they wear as fast, maybe even faster than r-compounds and 60 wears!

If you are an advanced or even high-intermediate driver your milage will NOT vary - I've tried these tires on numerous cars including my m2c, I like them, just I don't like what heat does to them. I just killed a set and replaced them with yoko ad08rs, Ill run them this weekend, but I had wanted to get the hankook rs-4s but no 255/35.

This is true. You cannot overcook 71R’s or they die. You have to keep temps and pressures in check, which is easy to do if you keep TPMS in place.

Start PSI around 27, go easy the first couple laps to evenly warm up the tire carcass and outer tread at the same rate, then drive them hard but don’t overdrive them (no sliding). If pressures get above 35, come in and bleed air off down to 32-33, repeat. This is how you should treat any track tire anyways.

It’s a sensitive tire, but I’ve tried R888R, PSC2, Trofeo R, Falken (18s), and R7s, and those all have other compromises. They either aren’t as fast (all except R7), tire wear issues (I’ve seen 3 911s blow out side walls on R888Rs, PSC2 can chunk) are more expensive (all except 18” Falken), or can’t arrive & drive (R7). I’ve heard the Yoko has good life, but isn’t nearly as quick.

If someone has found a better 19” track tire for our cars, I’m all ears, as we’re all in the same boat.

RS4 if you're willing to give up a little grip but 2X better wear. 71R or cold/damp just don't overheat them. Not sure if NT01's are available but they last pretty long with good grip and you can drive them to/from the track when they are still full tread.

Can’t get RS4 or NT01 in the right 19” sizes, or a lot of guys would be running them.

I've recently driven the RE-71R and R-S4 a couple weekends apart... The RE-71R has noticeably superior grip, and just as importantly they break away gradually. I found the R-S4s give less notice before they surrender grip, so I don't have the same confidence pushing them through high speed sweepers.

The RE-71Rs lasted 5 track days. Next time I'll flip them left to right (I run staggered) with the tread direction backward to get a couple more days out of them. The R-S4s tolerate heat extremely well (was over 40 psi before they greased up, that was my fault) and the wear is far superior.

But I'd kinda rather have the grip and confidence.

Thanks for all the info! I'm glad a lot of this is info is being shared.

I ended up going with the RE71 setup in the 255/285 configuration. The car will be anlittle above stock with down pipes, midpipe, mild tune, and M Performance coilovers. I really need to get camber plates as well and the car should be fairly ready to go.

Any suggestions on the camber plates?

I went Vorshlag plates and just did a track day on my new RE71’s - excellent grip as all have said but I did let the temps get a bit out of control towards the end of the sessions and the grip dropped off noticeably.

Re the plates - have been absolutely necessary for track work and I am finally getting even wear on my tires. Not a fan of the feint “clunking”
Sounds you get in everyday low speed driving due to the metal on metal bearings but I can live with that.

I went with Ground Control and there is no noise from the camber plates themselves, just a bit more NVH transmitted through the chassis from the suspension. I only notice this as a bit more road noise on rough asphalt. Is this what you’re referring to?

For the OP, I have 11k miles and 17 track days on them so far and no new noises yet indicating bushing wear.

At what level of front camber did you finally get even wear? I’m at 2.8 and the outer shoulders are still wearing ahead of the rest of the tire.

I ended up at -3.1.

I'm at -2.9 and getting even wear.

Yeah re the plates, I'm definitely getting more noise than I'd like. Not just ambient noise from the chassis, I'm talking actual knocking/clunking, like I can hear the metal on metal rubbing.

It's actually at the point where I'm taking my car back in to have it looked at..

Which cc plates do you run? I’ve had Steeda ones on my Mustang and they made no additional noise except for hardening bumps which is to be expected.

Lots of guys had voraschlag or other cc plates and complained of noise.

But on the stang -2.3 degrees evened out the front tire wear, so sounds like the M2 needs more camber.

I'll be running the Apex 19" EC-7's 9.5/10.5 this fall or next spring latest.

Will be fitting the BFG Rival 1.5 for both Auto X and track work. 275/35 front 305/30 rear. with 3.2F and 2.2 rear neg camber, maybe a tad more....

This is the #1 Solo 2 tire, and it wears better, both on the street and during events than the RE71R's.

Yes I've run both brands...the RE71R's make soooo much noise its insane, wear faster and are slower...

This will be the nastiest setup on our cars IMHO. If BFG adds some more 19" sizes to their R1's I'm all over those as well. Best track tire I've ever been on for wear, grip, and feedback...I've been on Ho Ho's, Kumho's, Yoko's, Toyo's, Hankooks, BFG's and the Bridgestones….

You won’t need that much rear camber, and good luck fitting a 275/35 upfront.

The 71R is a tiny bit quicker than the BFG in the dry, but it depends on the driver and setup. 71R is way quicker in the wet.

Vorshlag. I went with them based on feedback they relatively pretty quiet compared to the competition... maybe I should have researched better.

I'm having mine installed next week + dinan has suspension, will report back on the noise.

275 fits fine. It's actually the size Apex was offering for their recent group buy for the square setup.

That’s 275/30, and there are no worthwhile 275/30/19 track tires that I know of.

275/35 is too tall. You’ll rub right thru your fender liner and probably other stuff in no time. Even 265/35 rubs when the tire is new.
