N55 50,000 Mile Review
Welllll not sure if I have the highest mileage M2 but I intend to when its all over.
Bought this car new. Have had it tuned forever in one capacity or another. Right now running: Hex stage 2 Wagner Evo FMIC Fabspeed Catted DP 255/275 PS4S Thats it and really has been a peach. My commute is long but this was the perfect thing to make the best of it. The car itself? FLAWLESS. Needed nothing thus far but fluids which I change every 5k miles. 22 miles a gallon average. Overall couldn't be happier. Such a reliable thing. Driven from NJ to Maine twice recently. One was a 9 hour stint. BMW nailed it with this package. Just the right amount of everything and nothing. Very impressed and when it gets to 100k I will update agin. Give me another two years..... |

That is super awesome to hear. I swore I would never buy a BMW (after multiple leases) but I purchased my M2 a couple of weeks ago. She is a keeper for sure!

Have you done any valve cleaning? All direct injection engines suffer from carbon build up on top of the valves. I'm planning to get mine cleaned chemically every two years.

I use a simple fuel additive and they work really well. Either the STP super concentrate fuel system cleaner, or my favorite, liqui-moly. I’ve also ran a degunker through the block. Thing rarely skips a beat at idle. You feel it smooth out after running the stuff too.

Probably overkill. It's pretty well documented that N54s accumulate a lot of carbon, and probably need their valves walnut blasted every 40-50k miles. Those who have walnut blasted their N55s at that kind of mileage have shown far less buildup. 80k-100k miles is probably a more useful interval for the N55.

BG offers an induction service that sprays a chemical in the throttle body that is supposed to clean valves and intake passages. I wonder how that would work periodically. Their other chemicals seem to work really well.

You should be able to go longer than 50k miles on newer DI engines like the N55. I know guys with ecoboost engines that went over 100k miles and the deposits weren't that bad. This may vary from manufacturer but a little deposit is not a big deal. It's when the valves are totally coked up that you should look into it as you will start getting misfires. Using lower NOACK oils helps also as some oils can accelerate the issue.

I’ve done alot of intaking cleanings on the N54 and N55. I’ve done A handful on higher mileage N55s few with over 120k and just about everyone of them were almost spotless or have just a very think layer of cabon that you could literally just take your finger and wipe off and see the silver of the aluminum.
I came to the conclusion that the problem was reduced drastically and won’t need to worry about it. |
