Wait, whaaat!? A Civic Type-R is faster than a BMW M2 around the Nürburgring?!?
So was watching the latest episode of Amazon's "The Grand Tour" last night (great show if you are a fan of the three Top Gear guys and liked Top Gear) and James May was racing around in a new red Civic Type-R in that episode. Though I have heard great things about the Type-R (including at the LA Auto show), he made a claim during the show, "fastest front-wheel car around the Nürburgring..."
... I thought hmmm wonder how that compares to our very beloved M2 (aka I wonder how much SLOWER it was than our M2)... So for the Civic (2:48 mins in - great video by the way): And for the M2 (0:30 mins in): Survey says... Civic Type-R: 07:43:80 / M2: 07:58 Discuss... P.S. Yes I agree the Type-R exterior looks fairly fugly (actually gives me a headache when I look at it) BUT the interior looks really good to me and since I come from a Prelude Type SH (which I loved) I really have to say congrats Honda!! Once again proving that when you guys put your mind to something you really can build something that raises the bar... ...like the S2000... Don't misunderstand I still love my M2 and wouldn't sell it for anything (and I know there is waaaaay more to a car than just it's Nürburgring lap times) but the results are just shocking to me - that's all... |

You can also say it's faster than a m4, or a R8 V8. Doesn't mean it actually is.

Research the modifications done on the CTR in order obtain that 'ring time which as stated above, is quicker than the M4 when tested by BMW.

Ahhhhh so there is a back story here... ...that makes a little more sense.
For what it is worth the CTR was slower than the M2 in The Grand Tour's "Lap Board" around their "Ebola Drome"... BMW M2: 1:26:2 CTR: 1:28:2 ...but not by much... Either way from this point forward I will simply refer the New Civic Type-R as a "Type-R" vs a "Civic"... |

I don't care if it goes around the ring so fast that it causes the earth to reverse rotation and spin backwards on its axis...what an aesthetic mess. The Civic R is to the M2 as Kathy Griffin is to Gal Gadot. And maybe Honda should have thought twice before allowing the guy who went to Comic Con dressed as Dead Pool to design the interior. I'm surprised the pedals aren't red. Pass.

There are a lot of super fast American cars out there but I think they are designed like cheap toys and lack good classy design. Like what afwares referred to, the CTR could be the best fuck in the world but i would never be caught with it in public. Just say'n |

Honda Civic has an MSRP $34k.....you can spend a few grand fixing the exterior to your liking....probably shed 50 pounds on the parts too, and still be far below the MSRP of the M2.
So again another comparison between very different cars, at very different price points. Can't you just be happy for Honda! LOL They have needed a car with a sole for years! Bring back the PRELUDE DAM IT! (S2000 is a tiny car for small people, which I am not one.) I drove a Honda accord (81) and Honda CIVIC CRX (88) for many years! And wanted a Prelude but ended up leasing a '94 325is instead! You BMW snobs are showing your true colors (just kidding, I'm an Audi and BMW Snob). Plenty of young drivers are going to have a lot of good times in that "Civic" and they will be SPANKING you at red light races. LOL. And spending less on gas. But the M2 does have a larger gas tank to make up for it. LOL. But those Civic Door frames DAM! Mike

It's like the millennial version of the Screaming chicken trans am. There was a story in C&D a few years back where they did a long term test of an anniversary trans am that was done up with the bird and t tops in all its glory. They said no one wanted to put miles on it out of embarrassment. The guy they made do it said he wanted a bumper sticker on it that read "not my car".
That's how I feel about this civic. Don't care if it runs a 6 second quarter and a 1 minute ring lap |

Should everybody be calling Bimmers "kraut wagens"? I hope the majority of this forum are no longer in high school or stuck at that level of maturity.

Is your DD a tuned, modded or just a current tight wound Honda? If not why would your feelings get hurt. Oh and you can call them "kraut wagens" all you want, I don't really give a shit. Funny, a buddy of mine at work has a slightly street legal 600+ hp civic that cleans up at Mexico. What is on his rear window....... "Got Rice" in big white letters. Oh if you seen him on the street you would think he drives a Dodge Hellcat or something. His boys all drive hopped up GTR's I will stick to driving what I like...slow or not |

The term "rice rocket" (or "rice burner") is a racial slur against people of Japanese heritage. I'll grant that it has lost a lot of its meaning since I'm pretty sure I've heard Japanese-American people use it to describe Hondas... but it's still a slur, by definition. For the record, I'm a white guy (although I do actually have a Shiba Inu). Not sure why I have to explain this.

I had a new s2000 after my Honda Accord and Toyota Supra when it came out... I didn’t like the s2000, loved the Supra...But the only reason the s2000 and Supra has a cult following is cause they saw it on ‘fast and furious’. Other than being a fun track car, the s2000 was one of the worst cars I owned for daily driving. You needed to bring the engine up to 7000 rpm’s before the v-Tech solenoid kicked in and it was rough... can u just imagine daily driving the car at 7000 rpm everyday, every drive every shift... when the v-Ted didn’t kick in... it felt like a civic. my 600 cc race bikes were more fun in that aspect. I tried to live my life a quarter mile at a time with the s2000. But the next light was usually always less than a quarter mile! Edit: Count how many times I used the word rice and when I said race bikes I meant my 3 rice rockets, 600gsxr, 600rr and r6. Last edited by Bt12; 01-28-2018 at 04:31 PM.. |
