If your goal is to drive the hell out of it forever, why wouldn't you buy CPO at least to scrub off the initial depreciation?

Otherwise for sure optimize for resale since you're obviously going to sell. To minimize the damage, pick the best options in the resale market. Those are almost always manuals and hot colours.
So tell me where to find a CPO M2 where I can scrub off the depreciation. That said I plan to drive mine for 5 years so I could care less what the next owner thinks.
There have been numerous where I live. Just get on your dealers list.

This is a fair point too. Most M2 owners appear to be holding onto their cars long term, with very few leases due to the horrible rates. This has left the used M2 market with very few cars available.

Here in Canada at least, the cheapest USED M2 (not even CPO) is $3K above MSRP of a brand new one and has 6,200km (3,850mi) on the clock. Granted we get way less cars than the US, so YMMV there, but in general, that's more or less what the used market is looking like.

My Z4MC is a 6MT and commands at least a $5K premium over the DSG ones.
Plus if you bought new you saved money not buying the DSG.

Unfortunately I did not...I got it used a few years ago when I was 25 in what my wife called my "quarter-life crisis".

I fucking love that car to death though. The last true non-compromise M car. It had the amazing, 8,500 rpm redline S54 and hydraulic (let me say that again HYDRAULIC) power steering. It's also got a ride that can only be out-stiffed by an Elise or Alfa 4C.

I worry that a barely used M2 was a car someone bought intending to flip it in 3-6 months so they beat the shit out of the engine since they never intended to keep it. The second owner won't know how poorly they treated the engine.

Maybe I shouldn't have been worried about that though on a lightly used M2? Anyway I bought new, the discount on used at the time didn't seem to be much, though I didn't try and bargain anyone down.

I have a rear facing car seat in the back of my M2. My 5'2" wife is fine sitting in front of it but anyone taller than 5'6" or so would complain. Luckily I kept my E90 for daily driving. The real problem though is that it's a real PITA getting him in and out. Keep in mind though after they are about 15-24 months old they are forward facing and not so bad to get in and out.

I seem to go through those every 5 years. 25, 30, 35, 40. They usually result in motorcycle purchases for some reason.

I just ran the numbers for a 2016 M2 with 5,000 miles in excellent condition on the price guide and auction sites, and guess what: Some let me choose manual vs. automatic, and some didn't - but none of them showed any variance in pricing between the two, a sure sign that not enough of either have hit the used-car market. Most also didn't allow a choice of color, but one that did put white about $400 ahead of gray and black, with blue in the middle. Tomorrow, the values might be different.

The bottom line? Buy exactly what you want now, and don't worry about what the next buyer thinks, unless you're in the habit of buying a new car every year or two. And don't put a lot of weight in the numbers that are appearing today as a predictor of what will happen down the road. The sample of available used M2s now is way too small to predict what the market values are now or will be in 2 or 3 or 4 years, but if I had to take a wild guess (without even considering market-by-market variables), I'd say a used 5,000-mile 2016 M2 today is worth 90-93% of its original MSRP.

YMMV.

Owning a black car is like having a part-time job.

If you don't have time to keep the car looking nice it'll never look that great at the end compared to Mineral Gray.

The Mineral Gray will hide what the Black cannot.
