Sound deadening
Anyone know where the sound deadening material is being removed from the on the M2 in comparison to the M235. I see there is some in my trunk on the top deck and wonder where else will it be taken from. I would like to add it back in if possible. This is up there on the intelligence level with removing the oil dipstick and space to store a spare.

Agreed.
The removal of the sound deadening on the 1M is part of what adds to it's awesome character. There is no way in hell I would add it back in...and people wonder why they are making cars so numb nowadays. Exhaust too loud Too much road noise Suspension too stiff My left leg hurts Steering too stiff Seats too stiff Trunk is too small Backseats too small

They removed sound deadening material to save weight, and installed Active Sound which increases weight. This is M at it's best. M as in Marketing! They don't care about the weight savings of removing insulation. They stuck us with 8 way power seats and an iPad in the dash. If I wanted a hard core sports car I'd be looking at a Noble M400 or an Exige SC. The M2 a small GT car that can perform well. Give me a manual rack and mid engine for my sports car please. Oh, and some ear plugs too My Elise gave me tinnitus after a long hard summer. |

Does active sound actually increase weight? The speakers are already there. Maybe there's a tiny extra microphone in the engine bay. |

Not even a tiny mic. Active sound uses pre-recorded samples which are varied in playback according to throttle input, speed, and engine revs, as well driving the mode (louder in Sport and Sport+ settings).

I'm not sure there would be M cars for anyone to buy if people concerned about road noise bought a Lexus.

To those hairy chested types that want as many decibels as possible in their visceral driving experience.. umm.. that's nice. Rather than trying to diminish what others want, just roll down the windows. Or see if there is a hack later to turn up the fake noise from the stereo..it was put there for you.
For those of us that want a quiet daily driver to enjoy Bach on the way to the office with minimal mechanical intrusion, tire of a loud drone cruising at 80mph for hours on end, and/or would like to carry on a conversation with someone while driving, I really do get it. Removing sound deadening is either a misguided candidate for weight loss or a cheap trick to make a car seem more sporting. Thing is, very few of the reviews I saw even noted the sound level relative to highway driving. Possibly, as a demographic, they were all hairy chested too but I'm hoping the sound level will be tolerable. I mean, it would have taken line spaces away from oddly rabid rants about the rev match but I still think it would have been mentioned if it were really awful. In any case, if it is too loud for a car designed to somewhat evenly split track duties with more mundane pursuits, there is nothing we can do. At this point the alternatives fade and we'll just have to take the M2 for what it is. Last edited by Spook410; 02-21-2016 at 03:46 PM.. |

I can see where the concern comes from. I could go either way. I don't mind the removal if it presents significant weight savings. I would just argue that the amount of weight they saved is not significant enough to warrant the removal of the sound deadening. It's obvious why they removed it, though. One, it saves them money. Two, it drops just enough to get them below 3500 with 6MT and hopefully take less of a beating in the reviews over weight.

Just a thought, they might have removed the felt liner in the wheel wells which I noticed is on the M235i. From the pictures I've seen of the M2 it looks like typical plastic liners. |

Active sound and forcing power seats on us is a total insult though. I don't care if Active Sound only increases weight by 1kg. Trashing that module will the the first and possible only mod I do on the car. The next will be manual seat retrofit if that's even possible. |

Any chance just the base could be swapped out with a manual unit? Even the manual seats have electric actuators for the side bolsters. So it's not a totally manual seat. I know the power seats have the switch on the top to move them forward though. |

Wish there were manual cloth seats, no Idrive, and basic climate controls. But it's hard to find a car with those that's not an econobox.

Because we aren't looking for a Buick. Or a Lexus. Or a Lotus. Or an Alpha 4c. The M2 is a derivative of a luxury sports coupe; the BMW 2 series. It's not a sports car in the traditional sense. It is a daily driver that you can track. That means that noise levels should suit the daily driver function. Of course for those looking for the totally badass hardcore version you can either hope for an M2 CSL you can afford or maybe drill some holes to let more engine sound in.
