My guess would be that availability and production strategy is similar to the M3/4. They'll make as many as they can. The limited production will be exclusive to a "GTS" or "CSL" model.

Off topic, I guarantee you there will be a comp pack just like the M3/4 in the near future.

X1, 14,420. Guess this vehicle is more popular in other parts of the world.

Hypothetically speaking, of the 13,020 2 series, keeping in mind that there are 8 different models in the line up. Would it be fair to say, 20% were M235i's? This would equal to 2,604 cars. Now I need to ask the experts on here a question, if 100% of these M235i buyers switch to an M2, could BMW come close to meeting this annual demand?
I saw a stat that 5 percent of 3/4 series production is M cars and BMW sold 13k M cars in the US last year.

I would bet the model split is 40/50/10 for 228/m235/m2

1M (2011-2012):
- scheduled: 2700
- built: 6309

I don't want to alarm anyone, just passing along information. My dealer quoted me a number of 115 M2s for the initial allocations for the US. That may mean that only 115 are coming in the same batch in March, or it could mean for the 2016 Model Year (which ends in June). The email said "initial allocations" so I am leaning towards the first option.

“It’s not a mass market product by any means but it is a little more relaxed. I think we’ll have a little more access to this car and it’s not going to be a one-year special so to say.”

It will be no where close in numbers compared to the m3/m4. CSL version maybe but comp.pack no. Its alrdy very limited in options.

2002 E39 M5  [9.00]
As was stated, lots of speculation...

I'm sure the MY 2016 allotment will be small and difficult to obtain. However, it seems that even on this board there are many members on more than one waiting list, so cars will become available. I'm not in a hurry and I'm still potentially interested in the F80 competition package, so I'll see how the landscape shapes up later this year.
