"Is DCT worth the money ?"
Yes. Cool piece of technology for a few grand. "Is DCT worth it ?" Not for me. Getting 6MT even if M-DCT would be a 'no cost' option.

I do make a comparison to my BMW S1000RR HP4 with a quick shifter, so you can shift without using the clutch, just incredible. DCT for me is the same as the QS on the HP4, that ain`t bad I`ll tel you |

So maybe for marketing reasons the changed it for the US market to 'M' instead of 'manual'. It seems this is the same for M-DCT and DCT, where DCT did not have the possibility to change the setup of the transmision with a specific menu (like in my Z4 where you only change the characteristics via the "Fahrerlebnisschalter"). But btt: Yes if you WANT a dual clutch, it is worth the money. But I never was 100% satisfied with the DCT in the 35is, I always drive in manual mode. So I ordered the M2 with a 6MT, I only hope the 1-2 shift is better then in my M392, where it was horrible... In Germany the M-DCT is also a 3500 Euro option... Well, this is a kind of weird story; After selling the Cayman GTS PDK, I`ve got a loaner; 116d with MT, and it opened my eyes....... I ditched the M-DCT on the M2, MT it will be........ Yes it does costs more, but driving fun comes at a cost these days. |

Unless you NEED a manual, get the DCT

1- with the DCT you get excellent driveability, amazing technology and superior performance. 2- with a 6M you get to be part of the mechanical process of the vehicle and have that feeling of control that comes with driving a Manual high performance vehicle. There is simply no substitute for that. I would really like to hear feedback on the M2 DCT if it is different than the F8x due to no drivelogic.

And the M2 has Drivelogic too, just not individually selectable in each driving mode. As "SPORT" is programmable I (and a few more) hope that the gearbox is available to program there too and not just steering and engine. |

Appreciate the clarification. I think I understand what you mean as far as individually adjustable parameters vs. group adjustment. For my needs, group adjustment would probably work fine. The only parameter I tend to treat alone is the suspension. I tend to tweak that depending on the road I am on regardless of how I have the throttle, shifting, and steering set. I see this as a luxury, and not necessity... But that just my personal opinion of course. If the the M4 had not come with the individual parameter adjustment, I still probably would have bought it anyway, and never thought twice about it. I think the M2 is going to be a very popular car.

personally, i would never get DCT. Its not as rewarding as a manual, and resale will be worse (see SMG or DCT cars vs stick shift M's). DCT costs more up front and will cost you more when you sell (lower resale value, more expensive to repair).
that being said, buy what you want. If you want DCT get it. My opinion shouldn't matter.

Without the M settings as the F8x the DCT in the M2 may not perform as well and be the inferior of the 2 transmission choices.
If they plucked it directly from the F8x and kept the M settings the same and gave it the configurability to choose between s1-3 and D1-3 with normal/sport/sport+ settings it'll be worth the upgrade IMHO |

Is the manual more fun? Probably. But in the end of the day, it is outperformed in every aspect by the DCT. So it just depends on what your priorities are. I love the feeling of driving manual, but not as much as knowing the car gets rolled up in every way by a DCT equivalent.

I think the DCT can be just as fun as a manual, super quick, crisp shifts sounds like fun to me. I have owned many manual cars over the years but I am going to order the DCT, I love technology and the DCT is really cool tech. Plus I have a fused back and nerve issues so a manual on track days will be hard on the back. The reality is both are cool, both are worth it.

It's a great question though and one that apparently BMW is trying to play both sides of. Apparently this car has DCT and power seats for the purists ;-)? Personally I'm not offended at all, but very much reminded of the difference between E30 and E36 with the 1M and M2. |
