U.S. Cars are also adopting the standards, look at the corvette bumper for example. I have no idea what the rules are, maybe they only apply when a certain production level is hit - sure don't see the 458 or 918 with that goofy shit. |

I just don't understand how that cut line makes pedestrians more safe, versus having the hood connect at the grill? I'm looking for an explanation of the mechanics, not the rules. I get that the new rules say: your design must incorporate safety features for pedestrians. OK, so how does that cut line make the car safer for pedestrians? I'm sure there's a reason; it's just that no one seems to know it. My only guess is that by having the cut higher, the grill can compress when hitting a pedestrian. A giant sheet of steel (a hood) isn't flexible at all. To the contrary, I would imagine that the leading edge of a hood acts like guillotine to the legs when it impacts a pedestrian. The grill underneath deflects, but the hood does not because it is A) a huge piece of steel, and B) rigidly mounted to the car. That's my guess, but I don't know. The difference in "softness" of that grill versus a hood.... I just don't know if it makes much of a difference. It's like choosing between getting smacked in the head by an oak baseball bat or a pine one. Doesn't seem it would make much difference to me, but I'm kind of thick

Having the hood line higher reduces the chance of having the edge of the hood slam into you at a near 180 degree angle. instead, the front bumper portion can fold inwards when it is hit by a hip, for example, thus causing the hit pedestrian to roll onto the hood, rather than impacting the the hood's front edge. There's an engineer's perspective. |

I like the look, especially the combination of Alpine white and carbon fiber! And it will be even cleaner w/o the backup sensors!
