Broken Rear Spring
My 2020 M2C failed its MOT this week due to a broken spring at the rear. Thankfully, it was purchased as an AUC, so the warranty has been useful to get this fixed without putting my hand in my pocket. The point of my post is to urge you to check your springs, as I had no idea it was broken. The car was not sagging, there were no strange clunks or knocks, and it handled normally. It has covered <12k miles and there's no sign of corrosion, the wheels are not buckled etc, so it could have been a flaw in the metal...who knows

Heard of a few cases of broken rear springs on both M2 and M2C.
Similar to your scenario too with no obvious outward symptoms. An issue that used to plague my old E46 M3 too, though changing them was quick and easy on that model. |

Had this very same problem last month, dropped the car into main dealer for brake fluid service and an investigation into a creaking noise which was happening as passengers entered and exited the car, upon completion of the health check they discovered the passenger side rear spring had split in two!
There was no visual evidence or even any change in handling, the only symptom was the creaking! Two rear springs later I was on my way! Apparently its best practice to replace both at the same time. 2019 M2 Competition. 49k miles! |
