Modified FR sedan chassis vs a bespoke mid-engine sports car chassis. Cayman is in a different league if handling precision is what you’re after. If you define “fun” as hanging the ass out and the rush you get from turbo lag, M2 it is. Myself, I find it very fun to carve corners with scalpel like precision. Not hating, the M2 makes for a better daily, but it is not a sports car. The Cayman is.

The practicality I do like, and I also do like that the M2 is a bit lairy, but I do miss revving out an NA engine. I rented a V10 R8 a while ago for a week, and just loved the drama of it all (obviously V10 had a major thing to do with) - but I guess a 981 S would always be closer in feel to an R8 than an M2 would. |

I've only spent a brief amount of time in a V8 R8, so I understand the V10 engine is on another level but, chassis wise, I think I prefer the 981. R8 to me, was a little more GT car like. 981 feels like a baby 458.

I agree strongly with the sentiments of the other dual 981 F87 owners in the thread. I originally planned to buy a 981 GT4 when I decided to get the CS instead. It boiled down to two reasons really. 1) the F87 test drove that was non CS was more fun and playful on the street than my friends GT4 and 2) having two kids I realized I could drive the CS more often.
Both are fabulous cars and platforms. I ended up buying a salvage 981S a couple years later and that is being built into the track car because I still love the Cayman platform so much. My top line advice: buy the one you'll be able to drive the most. |
