LED Adaptive Headlights w/ Variable Light Distribution (VLD) - High Beam Assist (HBA)
In response to some questions in another thread, that were off topic, I'm starting this thread to clean things up.
To summarise, I was commenting on how the LCI LED Adaptive headlights were incredibly good, particularly when VLD has be re-coded on (it's disabled in coding by the factory for US cars). Here is a video to illustrate the point: The BlackVue Dashcams record in a way that preserves dynamic range, so you need to turn the brightness up on your phone / monitor / TV in order for it to be seen correctly, otherwise shadows will be too dark, and the headlights won't look that bright. Make it full screen as well if you've not already. Street sign reflections are almost dazzlingly bright with this headlights, I was really really impressed last night. I've only just uploaded this video as well... apparently, it takes a while for YouTube to process the higher resolutions of the file. It was 1080p60 originally, and that resolution should be available at some point. EDIT by Artemis - BMW video of the past explaining High Beam Assist:

I think VLD should work well for your car as well, but I'm not sure if it would work AS well as the LED version. The reason I say this is that I believe the LED units are made up with a number of different individual LEDs, and these appear to be able to move or be enabled / disabled separately. P.S. You might recognise where I ended up, though it's a little south of you.

For the Pre-LCI guys with adaptive xenons wondering if it's possible/safe to do this:
http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...0&postcount=19 Highly not recommended. You will only get partial function and it's extremely dangerous to other drivers. US cars lack the necessary hardware to properly shield the light out of the eyes of other drivers. http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...1&postcount=33 Edit: VLD is fine. It's GFHB that should not be coded on Pre Lci's. Last edited by AndrewC1989; 01-22-2018 at 11:18 PM.. |

In fact to quote from your first link "Partial functionality of VLD can be coded in by removing 8S4, however the beam shaping is not possible. Only the swiveling and beam throw are possible." This removal of 8S4 is what I'm talking about...

Haha, funny how the Dashcam picks up the intake roar. It's all stock though I'm afraid, besides ASD coded off.

HBA is High Beam Assistant - USA spec high beams that turn off in the presence of headlights or taillights of other cars and automatically turns the high beams on if no other cars are present.
Anti-Glare, Anti-Dazzle - European spec high beams that enable your car to keep the high beams on without blinding other cars. VLD is Variable Light Distribution - It only works on your low beams to move your headlights and position the beams on the road depending on steering angle and vehicle speed. Variable Light Distribution has several different modes of operation: 1 - City Light: Shallow and Very Wide Beam Pattern active from 0 - 50kph (30MPH) (Both Headlamps are Panned outwards 12 horizontal from center and 0.7 lowered vertically) 2 - Standard Light: Same Basic Beam Pattern as with 8S4 Enabled and Headlamp Switch Set to Auto. Active from 50 - 110kph (30MPH - 68MPH) 3 - Guiding Fog Light - Shallow and Wider Beam Pattern Enabled with the Front Fog Lamps On and Headlamp Switch in Auto and Speed 0 - 110kph (Both headlamps are panned outwards 8 horizontal from center and lowered 0.7 vertically) 4 - Highway Light - Long Throw Pattern illuminating approx. 25% further than Standard Light. Active from 110 to 250kph (68MPH- 155MHP). (Driver's Side Headlamp is panned 3.5 outwards Horizontal from center and lowered 0.25 vertically, while the passenger side headlamp is raised 0.2 vertical) |

VLD Coding
Quote:
I've been following your post regarding your coding with E-sys for VLD and NGHB. I will be taking my delivery of LCI soon in they bay area, and was wondering what would it take to code VLD on my LCI as this is one of feature that I always wanted from Euro and hated the fact that it gets coded off in US. I'm not engineer/coder like yourself so what would be the simplest way of coding this. I already have bimmercode and hesitant to go about coding with e-sys. For a second I thought you were up in mount hamilton but it seem you are south SF somewhere. |

Front Electronic Module > Expert Mode > 3073 LaMaster1 > LUT_FLC_FORWARDLIGHTING_Y > 9C,9C,9C (Both) 3073 LaMaster1 > C_AFS_ENA > Enable (Both) Note: You'll see two check marks. If you tap the top one, the bottom one will go away. Make your selection. Back out. Go back in. Both correct selections should have the blue check mark next to them. yes Last edited by AndrewC1989; 01-23-2018 at 10:48 AM.. |

So then alll you get with the adaptive headlight package in the US is auto high beams? Seems like a waste of money. In Canada it's 1500$ and it gives you both

Can you code it into US Vehicles? The anti dazzle where the high beams don't turn off?

I have a 2017 and adaptive xenons were standard so they were just a free perk. |
