Hockenheim Silver: I really do not understand the hype
BMW in Orlando, FL has a sold M2C in HS (DCT) and I went to go see it.
I have to say, I really do not understand the hype. I saw it only in the sun, so I suppose that may have an impact on the color. I was hoping I would see it and want to switch, but instead it just reaffirmed my decision. I guess my post is to see if I am just crazy, or do others feel this way and its just what side of the fence you're on.

I did get what I like. I specifically asked for opinions on the color. Read on (or block me) if you don't like it

I’ve ordered it (unseen in the flesh).
There are lots of photos on here that show it as white/silver in bright light, and others such as the ‘M2C detail’ thread that make it look Nardo/Chalk grey. I wanted subtle, not to draw too much attention but also liked the idea of something a BIT different. I hope it’s more grey than white when I see mine for the first time. |

I have to respectfully disagree with you - I think it's a really dynamic color, and has a large range of visual effects. Some like that, some don't, which is all good.
This is one of the best pics I have seen so far, and is from a new owner in CA if I remember correctly - looks badass to me here.

I was really hopeful for HS until I saw some 3/4 rear angle photos of it which completely hid the lines of the car. Also I feel that the color will be very hard to match on the bumpers. Finally, I love the subtle but unique look of the glossy greys like nardo or grigio telesto and I like how you get a hint of that with HS but then I realized that I would much prefer a darker grey (as seen in photos of hs in low light) and that I would just be settling on a mediocre grey/silver in my opinion.

Joking aside, I think the matching question can usually be solved by a competent and professional shop, should you ever need to do that. I don't think it would dictate what color I ended up choosing...

I just thought that maybe getting the front bumper resprayed could be a possibility several years down the road. Also there's a post floating around that shows pics of a new m2c with the white protective wrap still on the hood and the hood, fender and front bumper look like three equally different colors.

You saw it in bright sun and thought it looked primer gray. That sounds like a positive. All I've read lately is HS looks white in bright sun, which I wouldn't like. I am a big fan of primer grey colors, like Porsche Chalk Grey.

I think the white of the hood wrap adjusted the white balance of the picture in a way that made the subtle differences more pronounced. I don't know, but maybe it's a non issue since I've also seen countless photos where there were no differences in color between the fender and bumper.

Those photos do look spot on and it raises my confidence but two things to also note are that small pieces are easier to match than large panels and I would say that IND is at the high end of the spectrum when it comes to paint matching proficiency.

Hey guys, Tldr: It’s all subjective. But, thought maybe you’d find some of this interesting. It’s funny, but have actually done a lot of work on "pricing discrimination" strategies and marketing, and here’s some of the theory behind creating "exclusive colors" for consumer goods. What it all basically boils down to is exploiting the human need to "signal" status. Whenever, as a manufacturer, you come out with the latest iteration of your product, and especially if you raise prices, you have to find a way to differentiate it from the previous generation product, so that the buyers can signal to others that they have the latest, most exclusive product. Thus was Hockenheim Silver born. (Think about what Apple did with the rose gold watch when it first launched.) Really, in the end, any color is just a color. And whether a color looks good or not is entirely subjective (within bounds of our evolutionary preference for colors that signal abundance and plentifulness - vibrant reds, lush greens, deep blues - etc., and our evolutionary distaste for colors that signal sickness and putrescence - vomit green, runny yellows, etc.). But, the human brain is a funny thing. It will automatically gravitate toward liking things that are recognized by others as high status, regardless if we think we're being objective or not. And even if you're stridently, consciously, vigilantly aware of these biases, you are no less prone to falling prey to them. So, for example, when I first saw HS, I was totally underwhelmed, and thought, "Why in the world would BMW release that as the exclusive M2C color? I'm gonna get me some LBB on my M2C!" And then, slowly, over time, as more and more photos came out… as the reviews came out touting HS as the exclusive M2C launch color… strangely enough... HS is now my favorite color in the world! And no matter what you say, my cerebral cortex knows for 100% certain that it is my favorite because and only because it is OBJECTIVELY the best color in the world. Meanwhile, my limbic system knows that if my car is HS, the “in-crowd” will see it and say, “Whoa, that dude not only has the M2, which is widely considered the best true enthusiast’s M car currently in production, but he has the Competition model!” In spite of all this, it doesn’t make my love of HS any less true. I, honestly, truly, deeply love HS on my M2C. My wife said today, “I wish you would talk about how much you love me the way you talk about how much you love your car.” Hook me up to a polygraph, and it’ll show that HS is now my absolute favorite color in the world. But, yeah, Logan, to your point, totally valid that you saw it and it just doesn’t live up to the hype for you. In the end, it really is all subjective. |
