Track Day wheel and tire feedback
Please share experiences, thoughts based on this:
*Utilizing stock 2NH brakes so need 19” wheels *If ever getting to a point where doing a lot of track days, AP brakes and 18” wheel/tire combo would be utilized, so let’s assume 2-4 track days per year. What would be a better wheel/tire set up? 1)Stock 19x9 / 19x10 763M wheels with stickiest 245/35 + 265/35 tire set up available? 2)Stock 19x9 / 19x10 763M wheels with stickiest 255/35 + 275/35 tire set up available? 3)Aftermarket race wheel 19x9.5 / 19x10.5 with stickiest 255/35 + 275/35 tire set up available? 4)Aftermarket race wheel 19x9.5 / 19x10.5 with stickiest 265/30 + 295/30 tire available? I was original suggesting the last set up as the widest rubber was there, but, with so many great options in the other sizes, has me re-evaluating my position.

I run a 10.5" front / 11" rear stagger. These cars can really work the front hard so getting max rubber in the front can be very helpful with heat management. If you are going to buy I would look to at least a 10" front or better yet 10.5" square and then use a spacer in the front as needed. +33ish range works well for this.
A 10.5" wheel would give you the most contact patch with a 275. Tire progression is also a factor here if you buy - not a bad idea to plot out a path to your desired goal to make sure there are tires to fit at each step. Also never a bad thing to throw some slower, tougher tires on the stock wheels for awhile and go slide around the track for a bit learning the car. Can be a lot of fun too.

But now I'm on 9,5x18 and 10,5x18 with 265/35 R18 and 295/30 R18 and it's brilliant… AP brakes are what you need

I'm in the 3 or 4 category. I have the wheels, but couldn't find 255/275 in stock, and NOTHING but Pzero corsa in 265/30 and 285/30. Havent checked 295 yet for the rear.
I ended up with 245/265 on the 9.5/10.5 wheels in the interim (Falken RT660). I plan to do about 2-4 weekends a year. I may step up to a more aggressive wheel size in the future. |

@OG Shark
Appreciate the input. 100% agree with front tires overworked and under steer stock, can feel it a bunch already just pushing it within reasonable street speeds on stock power. Absolutely the way to go when more serious and/or more days work their way on the schedule. For the time being, with minimal commitment to days spent on track, looking at options that do not require a fair amount of camber adjustment, tweaks, etc, just throw on and go. If/when the day comes it is more serious, yours is the route to go, along with suspension tweaks! Can always sel of the current and but the next step! Last edited by DLEFTY; 08-12-2022 at 06:09 PM.. running 200tw tires with 265/285 35 r19 on Titan7 9.5/10.5
-3f -2r on Ohlins R&T 600MM ish ride height (corner balanced) Really like the balance no issue putting down 508whp. Front wear still uneven but is what it is on a staggered setup |

So my long winded (below) way of saying besides Apex VS-5RS being available in 19x9 and 19x10…..what else is out there in those sizes?
So many quality options of tires in 245/35 and 265/35 19-inch combos, and a smaller handful of 255/35 and 275/35…..both of which would work great on 19x9 and 19x10 wheel set up, the 245/265 combo I believe too stretched on the common 19x9.5 and 19x10.5 set up most Track Wheel manufacturers seem to offer…. For me, starting with the OE sizes for wheels and tires is a great way to learn the car, while increasing on track driving skills. Not too much ego here, I am well aware a new to me car is ALWAYS faster than I am. My job is to enhance my reaction time to keep up with the car. It's easy to throw money at the car and not get the return. I want to outgrow the cars capabilities, when that happens, I’ll worry about getting another new set of wheels and tires that help push the envelope further….probably 18’s with AP Racing brakes. When someone comes up to me at the track and says, "Wow, you were really moving out there, I couldn't keep up with you in my……then it's time to move to the next level ! |

Okay, deleted last message as I hadn't actually read the whole thread.
If you're going to stick with stock wheels or OEM sized wheels and want a tire setup. I can't recommend Hankook RS4 enough. They only have 245/275 available but their 245 runs wide so it fits like a 255 so will fit a bit nicer than a PSS for example. The bigger stagger will have a bit of extra push, but really minimal. I have a friend that ran this setup on 9.5/10.5 FIRs (they fit fine because of the width of RS4s) and he is a blazing fast driver now. RS4s last forever, they're very quick, and they'll be quicker and handle heat better than a PS4S/etc. A good tire to learn the limits on and once you can tell that this tire is limiting you from going faster, you can move on to the Super 200 category of tires. Btw, same guy was winning and placing Top 3 in a couple time attack series here (legitimately fast times) with OEM brakes and 19" wheels (FIRs), so APs can wait a while for you likely. tl;dr Start with RS4s on stock wheels or whatever aftermarket wheels you like the look of. When you want to get more serious go to a square setup with RS4s. When you want to search for tenths, go to a square setup with CRS/A052/RE71RS/etc.
