SMB has never been on an E46. SMB was a new color for the F12 M6. You're thinking of Interlagos Blue which is similar but a bit darker and much less metallic. IB does not have "pop" like SMB.
SMB is a sporty color but I could see how one would think Interlagos is not, especially in overcast light or if it was dirty. SMB is super metallic and is really eye catching in person.
