Yeah Audi really started it, especially since S-Line included no additional engine performance and in many cases no suspension upgrades, it was all asthetics.
2 years ago I knew the extra ///M badging would come to the US when I was in Scotland, almost every BMW had M badges all over it straight from the dealer, in the kidneys, on the side, and the rear.
The dilution of the badge started in Europe a long time ago.
