It's mentioned in the last paragraph of the first post. They probably used lithium battery and BMW states it reduced weight by 14kg or 31lbs.
Considering the amount/cost of carbon fiber or other materials needed to offset 31 pounds, why wouldn't BMW just make this battery stock on all M models? Seems like a very inexpensive way to shave 31 pounds.
It already comes standard on M3/M4 and I believe it costs around $1200 if you need replace it. However, there are aftermarket lithium batteries around $1000 range that provide the same benefits (some of them reduce weight even more in fact). It's pretty obvious IMO why they put it in M3/M4 but not in M2 (just to reduce the cost as much as possible, the same way they didn't add aluminum hood and fenders, CF roof and trunk etc on the M2 while they are standard on M3/M4).
