Never had issues on or off the track with any negative effects. Easy mod that takes no time and cost zero. There was a Company in Europe that measured Caliper temps after track sessions before and after removing shields from an M2 and the difference was in the 60C range (If memory serves). Unsure how scientific that test was but at least a data point to consider.

EDIT: I always heard the dust shields also work as heat shields to protect suspension components. Did you ever notice any accelerated wear?
