The DSG in the Golf R is great. Not sure exactly why you hated the behavior as in regular mode it does it's job going the gears quickly for fuel economy and sport is fairly sports. It also has the kickdown switch behind the gas pedal so if you put the pedal to the floor it bypasses the shift logic to automatically kick down to the lowest available gear relative to current speed for maximum acceleration. It's not like S-Sport mode in my old EVO X TS-SST where it wouldn't shift until redline in every gear but it's a good balance IMO.
