Thinking back, having owned BMWs for 20 years.
My first winter beater was a Neon R/T. A fun little car but it sat in the garage 350 days of the year. Not too many bad weather days in Charlotte, even back then. A guy thought I was crazy using it to pick up pine needle bales. I later did spend an hour cleaning out the trunk....

I then traded for an '06 X3. Useful for errands throughout the year, and allowed me to go for low mileage leases on the good car.

Now my winter beater is an X3M It saw 15 minutes of snow last winter, and that was on a Christmas trip to WV. But its a great daily, and my M2C is a low mileage weekend car.

But I took a look and you can find 2nd gen X3s for ~ $30k, even the 35i. I have a lot of friends with them.
