It may have been a throttle positioning sensor error which will thus affect the engine braking and Max applied mind over matter to conquer it.
On my previous Merc Sport once after starting engine there was no response from it just stuck on tick over.After switching it off then on again it cleared.

Indeed my friend . I already saw it in Lap 1 . Something was not right in the way how Charles could overtake MAX .
MAX lost there at that moment at least 6-7 seconds in a few laps ...and the race as well .
Actually it's very impressive that he finished on the podium with his second place !
