Steel or aluminum is what I've used in the past no carbon crap.
Certain tracks are much easier on brakes than others. On the faster ones I used to block all or part of the NACA openings. I measured this with an external pyrometer on the rotors.
Last, rigging a proper hose and routing it correctly only required me to change out the hose every 15K or so. Easy peasy
