The NEXENs on my son's Subaru are a pretty decent option. But you are kidding yourself if you think winter tires are all basically the same. To be fair, in the GTA it might not make much difference, but there is a lot to be said for buying the winter tire configuration that best matches your local environment.

Like you, we don't get too much heavy snow in Kingston. But we do get lots of slush, ice, and rain. I have an "ice" compound tire with lots of sipes, and not deep snow lugs on my GTI. It's been great. But if I lived closer to Ottawa or Barrie, I'd probably want something like Hakkas or Nokians with much more "snow" properties.
