Apple doesn't charge a licensing fee for carplay. BMW pays nothing other than the hardware to support the software. So no chance there is $80 worth of improvements per year that are being passed along. Apple also doesn't allow manufacturers to modify it's software so there really isn't any cost for BMW. It's simply a cash grab. |
I sincerely doubt there is no cost involved; Apple or BMW are not charities.
The fact that there's a annual fee and it's integrated into the iDrive interface, that's now going to get updated wirelessly, ensures that it's always going to have the latest software, which would include revised versions of CarPlay.
