Every car I've ever seen with folding rear seats can release from inside the cabin. Some of them also have a way to release from in the boot... I'm surprised that BMW doesn't have both.

My Jaguar doesn't have a release from the inside, but it does have a mechanical key hidden under a cover next to the button for the electrical release, so it's not an issue.

I believe the reason there is no release inside the car, is for security. If you put something expensive in the trunk, and it could be got to easily from the passenger compartment, that wouldn't be very secure.

The only cars that I remember having folding seat access in the passenger compartment are those where the trunk is accessible anyway because it's a hatchback / wagon etc.
