The e39/e46 era had a very clean hoodline that integrated the grill into the hood. This visually hid the seam excellently.
I am sure this is more expensive to manufacture since it is a much “deeper” part to stamp and in more recent models they went back to the traditional “flat” hood with seam clearly visible.
Darker colors can help hide the seams better than white cars
