I'd imagine the ECU unit is VIN Locked to the car and a new unit would have to be synced and interfaced with all the other ECU units
I'd also imagine that the software and procedure necessary to do this is something only BMW techs have access to and can do with ease
But no one will stopping you from trying, probably won't work, but who knows
