In my opinion that's definitely overpriced. The chance that you will have 3k worth of issues is very slim. My mechanic friend works at one of the BMW dealerships in the Vancouver area and he said the N55 has been one of the most reliable engines he's worked on. So as long as the car wasn't abused I wouldn't worry about being out of warranty.
