Not going to take sides here, but I'm definitely careful about where I park. If I need to go to a "less desirable" part of town I take my VW Golf. 😁 She's been such a great little beatermobile.
Anecdotally, this seems to be more common in Europe. Maybe because people park on the street more? Maybe because it's easier to get away with? 🤷🏻*♂️
...in the US you have much more "freedom" to protect yourself and your property...
