I would give it a whirl, especially if you've never driven a Cayman or Boxster before. The experience is pretty different, and it remains "the" standard in my opinion.
I can understand why some of the reviews were rough on the 718 - you ARE paying 90+K for a 4 cylinder...and after having the F6 in my 981, I can understand why people would be turned off by the 718's approach. But it's a really, really good car and I had a ton of fun on my test drive.
