No joke here. To bring a bit of math to the discussion, I would answer that the character of an engine is more in the derivate of its power curve than in its integral. A constant acceleration over the last 2000 rpm is not as fun as an ever increasing push up to the redline, even if it gives similar performances.
Look at the power curves of a GT4 or 911s. Do they become all flat in the last 2000 rpms? Nope...
