In the press release, they claim that they're going to contact current subscribers individually and give them a specific offer/credit, based on their market.
My guess is those that paid $300 for the "lifetime" CarPlay subscription will be allotted prorated credit by dividing it by 20 (years).
Even with the previous
BMW APPs, although they don't specifically charge you for it, if you don't subscribe to the "ConnectDrive +" internet plan, they disable those in-vehicle interfaces, including album art, so "free" offering of CarPlay without any other strings attached is quiet a gift.
BMW retroactively issuing credits for a paid feature is usually unheard of. They typically screw their early adopters in situations like this. They must really be going for a complete exoneration in The Court Of Public Opinion, for their early indiscretion in being the only auto manufacture that charged a fee for CP.
