They are entirely passive and the soot burns off during overun (deceleration) when oxygen levels are high and temps are high.
If soot builds up too much then the back pressure builds up so the DME will look to allow more airflow during overrun.
As the ash (from burnt soot) builds up and this cannot be removes, the DME will reduce engine power output until ultimately the OPF needs replacing (60 -100K miles)
This isn't something BMW put in the sales brochure!!

This is not a filter, it's a performance killer.
