If you think about it though it actually makes more sense to call them something like BHP and maybe uncorrected BHP. The terms people commonly call WHP and WTQ are estimated crank HP and TQ numbers without correction for drivetrain loss.
WHP sort of works because the output speed of a gearbox or final drive changes opposite the torque increase by the same factor, so it cancels basically. What most people call WTQ is very badly named because it's actually estimated crank torque without correction. It doesn't take into account final drive ratio and wheel diameter (first gear actual wheel torque is a huge number for most cars, for example).
Yeah we all know what it means, but I can understand why Europeans would finish back-calculating all the way to the crank even though the drivetrain loss is just a guess.
