I have XS Max and really don't see the benefit of upgrading. The 5G doesn't seem to be ready for the prime (spotty coverage, slow speeds, not needed for any apps), plus with Corona I am mostly staying home and can use my 1GB connection.
When I was younger I would upgrade every year, but the "new" features are really minor at this point.
I pay for my phones in full as I travel frequently and like to have them unlocked. I paid ~1200 for XS and the current trade in value is 370...
