The best source for engine oil information is at bobistheoilguy.com. Those guys are hardcore on the subject matter. The 0W-30 oil our car comes with is probably fine for many applications but to expect one oil to be appropriate for such a wide variety of environmental conditions and driving demands is unrealistic so I wish BMW would do more to provide its own recommendations. Short of that a source as mentioned above or a great tuner such as bimmerworld are great sources of solid information. I live in AZ so its very hot and a track my car so I am using Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W-40. Having said that there are many great choices out there. Also if your really concerned it's worth doing a oil analysis from time to time also to help set your intervals and oil selection rather than picking a random number of miles to change.
