Changing engines midstream for a specific generation M car is not without precedent (F87 M2, obviously and one of the earlier M3s, can't remember which), but it is not the typical BMW approach. I am not sure if this is the case, but I am unaware of any single generation M car getting three different engines over the span of the life cycle (which would have to be the case with the F87, were it to get the S58 in CS/CSL guise). That would be pretty remarkable.
I also think, based on pecking order, that you won't see the M3/4 come after the M2, but we shall see.
