Subsequently the dealer had the car for 6 days over several further visits and racked up almost 200 miles (!) trying to trace it's origin. It had a new shock absorber fitted prior to them identifying the diff as the potential problem.
Last week it was returned after a three week wait to have the new diff fitted.
When I went to collect it I was informed that the diff had been fitted, but unfortunately it was not a compatible fit with the propshaft!
Our car is now having the original diff re-fitted whilst a new one is ordered -again!
Still... We have the delights of a 218d whilst it's in the sick bay...
