AFAIK, the starter/alternator is really beefed up relative to a normal starter/alternator in cars with ASS.
Constant stoping/starting causes more wear on the engine itself. Not just the starter, etc. And fuel savings are nominal at best if used as designed. It's really just Enviro Marketing BS, and can potentially shorten the lifespan of the engine.

I turned the feature off with the touch of a button, but I'm in the US.
I'm in the U.S. as well, and I, too, either turn it off or manipulate the clutch so the car won't shut off. I also agree that the gas savings are negligible.
