Just another viewpoint here, but I did the midpipe, painted the stock rear, and added a VSC-2 to keep the exhaust valves open as I choose. I find the sound level to be quite increased and acceptable. Still much cheaper than a full exhaust, too.
The stock rear, when the valves are open, is pretty much a straight-through design. Keeping the ability to close the valves maintains the ability to keep the neighbors asleep and at other times your passengers happy.
