You can definitely race to the West Coast in 3 nights (or faster if you switch drivers) but you'd lose all the joy and be missing a ton of amazing sights along the way. IMO you should budget 10 days each way if you want to have an enjoyable trip, and even then it's pretty rushed. For instance, we only really got to get out and do things in Banff on the way there.
Would you recommend the drive from Toronto to Vancouver or Vancouver to Toronto? I'll most likely do one leg of the trip in the states.

I'm thinking Toronto to Vancouver, down to LA, across to Arizona and Texas and up to Chicago via Route 66.
