I got an M car because of the financial ease of ownership. If it's going to cost me considerably more to own, then maybe I should have looked at more expensive cars instead?
To my mind, the issue is the durability of certain parts. My X1 has always had a weird brake issue, and they've changed the front brakes already once at 10k. It's not tracked or abused. I'm now considering a Mazda CX-5 as a replacement, similar driver enjoyment but a big discount.
On an M car, people should really do their sums if they keep their cars for a short time, or lease. You wouldn't want a $3-4K parting gift on your lease end...
