I think a major factor, at least for some of the higher end BMWs, is the availability of double-clutch transmissions. These are not the slushboxes of old. As a manual-transmission-driving enthusiast, I have to admit that driving the DKG is a joyous experience. I will never deliberately opt for a conventional automatic slushbox, but if double-clutch is available on my next car, I sure will be tempted.
