Anyone had issues when trying to connect Bimmercode to their OG M2?

Context is this:
I have a late 2016 M2 DCT, stock
I have a OnePlus 5T on OxygenOS 9.0.9
I have a Veepeak OBDCheck BLE OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner purchased from Amazon in the last couple of days.
Phone in Airplane mode, removed the BT connection from phone to iDrive, removed (in this case) BT connection from my phone to my Samsung watch.

So, the symptoms:
I can make a new connection to the OBD dongle. Sometimes it will ask for the default pin to connect, sometimes not.
When connected, I can start the app connecting but it will either tell me the connection is closed, or it will bring up the vehicle selection list (I'll choose M2) and it will then fail on the connection.

For whatever reason, I can't transfer licence / purchase to an iPad I have, so I'm stuck on the phone for the moment.

Anyone any suggestions?
