I did to really have to remove the bumper to install. I had to remove it to do some rattle can painting and heard that BMW recommend you remove the bumper to remove the FMIC. After the whole process it is not necessary but makes it easier because you can see really well and you don't need to jack your car.
I installed a CSF FMIC. Big Turbo is next. Debating whether to do this myself.
