The solution was to get a file that contains the unlock code and simply plug this in to USB. Within seconds I had Navigation back, and it's been fine ever since.

The only complication as I understand it, is that you have to have access to a BMW tool / server in order to get this file. As long as you have the VIN, and these tools, you can get the file and everything will be up and running again.

As I said initially, I feel that BimmerCode should have a means to back up this (and other FSC) files on first connect, just in case this happens again. The very fact that there is someone out there charging $65 for this service shows that it happens frequently enough that they feel they can make a bit of extra cash!

So my car is fixed, but I'm $65 out of pocket. I'm still pretty annoyed, but the fact that my brand new car is working again eases the pain a little.
FSC code backup isn't always a proper means of doing it, so I can see why Bimmercode guys aren't able to do so.

FSC repair kit is generally a free process, however it's logged by BMW to prevent abuse thats why most guys charge a fee to do this through the back channels. I don't know how your system got corrupted but the issue was probably you used the factory reset which it must have meant some CAF files got corrupt.
