Never go ballz deep with the nozzle.
Put in "just the tip" up to the first ring of the nozzle against the fuel filler neck so that the pump won't fall out. You don't need to hold the pump, it will not fall out. This has two benefits, 1) let's air escape so that the pump doesn't stop from back pressure 2) stays clear of your paint.
Been using this method for years with no problems.
