Kyle, there was a P85, it was just never raced. According to the BMW F1 paper, the official designation was P85/5 or 84/5, BMW uses both terms in their paper (but you are right, it was a P84 that was modified for longevity). You're right about the P83 being pretty awesome though.

The P85 was going to be direct injection (way ahead of its time) until the regs limited the fuel system to 100 bar. The cylinder spacing on the P85 was only 4mm of thickness between bores!

The M12 turbo was a great engine too; the M10 was amazing already in NA form and then throw a turbo on you had *bam*, over 1000hp in quali trim. I've heard the M12 could make north of 1300 but I don't know that anyone ever dyno'ed it like that.
