You can open and close them through the app but the app must remain open for it to be in control, otherwise it reverts to stock settings.
Some have said it times out after 15 minutes as well.

I have an Akrapovic and I bought the CG VSC-2. 15-20 minute install, preset buttons (I did automatic for factory default settings and open), it's programmed to the home link for open and close control.

The Akrapovic came with its own sound kit that was needlessly complex to install, involving full trunk interior disassembly and running wires through body grommets.
