Generally I agree with you, and I never pay to have it done. However, I bought a used 911 (993) with it, and it did help protect the paint although the edges started to come up, getting a nasty looking dirt line. My M2 had it dealer installed (it was a dealer halo car, with every option possible thrown at it) and I'm glad it's there, although I sometimes wish I had the cash instead.

Insurance is supposed to return the car to the state that it was in before the accident. So your insurance (or the insurance of the guy/gal that hit you) should cover a new Xpel application for the repainted areas.
